Piedmont Triad International (PTI) Airport will open its new 9,000 foot parallel runway today, enabling simultaneous limited visibility landings, for the new FedEx package sorting east coast hub. FedEx occupies about 170 acres on PTI’s northern edge and has the potential to accommodate more than 20 planes a day to serve its new eight-building complex, which opened in June. The planning process, which began back in April 1998, with the rerouting of Bryan Boulevard and a major new interchange into the airport opens, up an additional 200 acres for development. This kind of infrastructure positions the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High point market for exceptional growth at just the right time, coming out of a major economic shift.
